On October 31st, I will be saying goodbye to my friends and family. I will be switching my phone to silent mode. I will be locking myself inside my room with my a large supply of pens, notebooks, my computer, and an unhealthy amount of junk food and caffeine. I will become simply a memory to those closest to me.
Because next Friday, at midnight, National Novel Writing Month begins.
For anyone who doesn't know, National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo) is when people write the first words of a novel on November 1st and the last words on November 30th. They have an idea and a word goal, and for the entire month, writing is their life.
It's not an easy task. In order to succeed, one must battle their inner editor, which is a difficult war to win, and learn to survive without sleep. It's like fighting a war, except with pens and computers instead of guns and bombs. This is the most brutal time of year.
So, on Halloween night, I will be bidding everyone adieu and retreating into a world of fiction. Society will forget that I exist until I emerge thirty days later, pale and exhausted but with a sense of accomplishment.
I'm really excited for NaNoWriMo this year! I hope we can beat our class word count from last year, which was just over 300,000 words! :D
